How brainwave entrainment works
The brain's electrical activity has a dominant frequency at any moment — the brainwave state you're in determines what you can do and how you feel. When exposed to a consistent external frequency, the brain naturally tends to synchronize — this is called brainwave entrainment, and it's been documented in EEG research since the 1970s.
Functional music exploits this tendency deliberately. By embedding specific frequencies (binaural beats, isochronic tones, or solfeggio frequencies) into a composition, the music creates a frequency environment that gradually draws the brain toward a target state — typically within 6–10 minutes of sustained listening.
Critically, this works best when the listener actually stays engaged — which is why musical quality is not a luxury but a functional requirement.
